Keep It Short and Simple

This video was made at Tasmanian Bakeries, who employ several recently arrived migrants.
In a noisy factory environment with extremely hot surfaces, it is important that safety information is clearly understood. Jim, the Production Manager, shows the wrong and then the right way
to give instructions to Dahir.

Key messages

  • plan your instructions so they're in a logical order - first, second, third etc
  • have important equipment, eg oven mitts, ready to show
  • find a quiet place to talk
  • face the worker when you are talking to them
  • speak slowly and keep your sentences short
  • pause after each sentence or step
  • keep an eye on their body language to see if they are understanding
