Key messages

  • plan your instructions and be ready to explain any jargon, acronyms or special words
  • speak slowly and keep your sentences short and direct
  • watch the body language for signs of problems
  • show, rather than just tell
  • invite them to repeat back the instructions to check if they've understood
  • be clear about your expectations and, last, but not least:
  • don't use slang unless you have time to explain what it means!
